They include finalists in Callaghan Innovation’s C-Prize competition, OneBin and Compost Made Smart, who are creating tech-savvy solutions to stop NZ’s landfills from bursting at the seams.

Speakers
Richard Quin is the Energy and Environment Group Manager at Callaghan Innovation. He leads a national team of Customer Managers and Business Innovation Advisors that support NZ businesses in high-tech manufacturing, energy, environment, aerospace and logistics. Richard has worked at Callaghan Innovation since 2015, starting as a Digital Business Advisor and later moving into his current role three years ago. Prior to this, Richard worked in the private sector for more than 30 years, working across organisations of all sizes, from startups to multinationals, spanning a diverse range of industries, including information technology, communications, banking, transport, and retail.
Jono Ring
Jono’s mission with his C-Prize team Zincovery is to make the galvanizing
industry waste free.
The Galvanized steel industry produces waste acid which contains large
quantities of zinc and iron. Currently, this is disposed of into landfill
and wastewater which both pollutes the environment and wastes a finite zinc
resource. However, there is no affordable alternative to disposal yet.
Zincovery aims to provide a low-cost recycling service for waste acid. This
is achievable because new technology fully recycles the waste acid,
extracting the maximum value. The recycled products of zinc, iron oxide, and
fresh acid can then be reused in industry.
Carl Lickfold
Carl has always had an affinity with technology and a passion for solving complex challenges.. His C-Prize team, OneBin, formed around a collective passion for solving environmental problems, and after identifying an opportunity to use technology to improve recycling systems. OneBin’s goal is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill while educating people about recycling so they do the right thing, whether people use the OneBin system or their own recycling bin at home.
