Understanding technical knowledge gaps and how you feel about code is always extremely difficult and it can come from a bias position, I wrote it so it’s fine… We needed to find a way to get some surface analysis at a high level across our entire technical team. We have created a method of doing just this and it has proven to be extremely useful through times we are currently faced with, along with the ongoing continuous improvement efforts of most engineering teams.
We use it to understand where we need to spend effort either on knowledge sharing, or re-writing code. It enables us to give product fair expectations around delivery and means we can carve out time each sprint to work on an area. It also creates the idea of ‘team health’ which we use as a measure to determine whether a team needs ‘work’ or not, and also for engineering to operate more effectively especially post-Covid.
Throughout this talk we will speak to the logic behind the process along with what we do and use to surface this information and use it on a regular basis to inform our decision making.
Key topics covered:
- How do you attribute technical ‘hygiene’
- How do you manage the hygiene of a team while innovating.
- How the system works
- How we enable better product and strategic decision making.

Graduated with a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Brussels. For
my research , I did a lot of programming in C, C++, Python, and Haskell and
absolutely loved it. After leaving Uni, I worked as an embedded systems
engineer, programming hardware crypto accelerators in ANSI C for 2 years.
After that I gave a shot at my own company for about a year, teaching myself
JavaScript and modern web development in the process.
After moving to NZ, I joined Movio, and worked as a backend developer for
about a year, working on a Scala web backend. After that I worked as a Team
Lead for about two years working on various projects involving web frontend,
web backend, and big data transformation pipelines. For the past three
years, I have been working as Head of Technology at Movio, managing our
company's infrastructure, tech strategy and engineering best practices.
With a history in Software Engineering Lindsay is accountable for managing
and coordinating resources with the primary concern of Developer wellbeing
and productivity. Making the practice of engineering at Movio empowering,
innovative and as pain-free as possible.
Before Movio, Lindsay worked for Design Agencies & Sass product
companies building products from the ground up. With a desire to positively
impact the wellbeing and productivity of Engineering Teams in the industry,
Lindsay likes to take a pragmatic approach to process and change.
