Speakers
Liz Hampton is IBM New Zealand's Social Responsibility lead, with
expertise in business-community partnerships and a passion for education and
the evolving future of work.
Liz works collaboratively with business, educational institutions and
community organisations to deliver sustainable partnerships that address
societal issues, and focus on workforce skills and organisational
capability.
She is most known for bringing the IBM educational P-TECH programme to New
Zealand, setting up a three way partnership between business, tertiary and
high school. P-TECH, or Pathways in Technology is an innovative school
model, integrating high school and tertiary coursework, alongside building
work-ready skills for students. At the programme base is student mentoring,
workplace visits and projects and work experience and internship
opportunities.
In New Zealand, the P-TECH partnership includes Aorere College and Manurewa
High School, IBM and the Warehouse Group, and Manukau Institute of
Technology. The programme is underway with a Year 1 cohort of 43 Year 11
students.
Pete Jones is the Principal of Manurewa High School. Originally from the UK,
Pete taught in three different schools in Manchester for nine years before
becoming a Director of Ralph Capper Interiors, focusing on interior fitouts
for offices, hotels, bars, residential properties and educational
establishments. He came to New Zealand in 2006 and restarted his teaching
career at Manurewa High School and was appointed principal in 2016.
Manurewa High School is a large co-educational secondary school in South
Auckland and the largest decile 1 school in New Zealand, catering for
students from Year 9 to Year 13. The school roll of over 2000 reflects its
multi-cultural community with an overall mix of over 50 nationalities.

Marima Lay
Marima is a Year 11 student at Manurewa High School and also one of the
first Pathways in Technology (P-TECH) students in New Zealand. P-TECH is a
partnership model between school, tertiary and business, helping students
build work-ready skills and tertiary qualifications that connect to
entry-level roles. She joined the P-TECH class to explore her interest in
the technology industry through both learnings in the classroom and the
outside world. She says P-TECH is already giving her a lot of opportunities
to aim high, explore, learn and connect with others.
